Back In The Day
If you recall the movie Dirty Dancing you saw a shag dance style as well as others. Songs such as Do You Love Me by The Contours were great for dancing. As a result they have been favorites along the Southern Coast since the 1960’s.
That music still resonates today as beach musicians like The Embers, The Band of Oz, The Catalinas, and Coastline perform.
Hall Of Fame
- Bands like Clifford Curry and She Shot A Hole In My Soul
- The Drifters and Under The Boardwalk,
- The Chairmen Of The Board,
- and The OKaysions set the stage.
Todays music played by Too Much Sylvia is a reflection of those who inspired current beach musicians to play a style of popular shag dance music that is highly developed in presentation beyond most regional bands.
Other parts of the country simply do not have the calibre of entertainment as The Carolinas and Virginia.

Eddie Floyd with Never Found A Girl, Knock On Wood and such greats as Wilson Picket’s Midnight Hour.
The White Brothers, beach musicians from Virginia,
The Showmen, and
The Fantastic Shakers.
Never forget The Poor Souls. They performed for decades starting a style of soul beach unrivaled to this day.
Sun Fun
Myrtle Beach Days, Summertime’s Calling Me, Far Away Places all light up the shag dance memories of sun kissed faces and moonlit nights in the salty air.
Too Much Sylvia is active year round especially in the Summer months along the Coast.
The most vibrant time for beach musicians as the warmer months are when vacationers and locals gather to let the good times roll and make memories.
The Spontanes – An amazing group of beach musicians from the Triad area of North Carolina should always be mentioned.
